Lucky Doughnuts and Dirty Little Jar

Lucky Doughnuts, Monterey Park 12x16 oil on linen is sort of an experiment on how little can make a painting. I think perhaps the camera could be pulled back a little, but for some reason I felt like painting this. I did it rough and fast, literally grinding the brushes down. Not a strong as some I've painted, but worth posting I hope. The still life is my turps jar, it was clear at one time, now it's foggy with paint filth.

Dig that little jar, the simplicity and color are sweet.

And the Donut/Liquor/Deli painting is fantastic, the odd cropping is actually kind of cool. Nice touch with the firey sky.

Scrubbing and grinding down with the brush produces some GREAT energy, but sometimes, can't you hear your brush scream? I think in your case, torturing the brush was worth it.

Both of these are really nice, Bill. I have no problem with the cropping of the first one - it works. I, too, am a brush-scrubber; I'm surprised at how fast I wear my flats down to filberts and finally to just a few hairs. When the hairs start to come out every other stroke, the brush gets tossed stuck in a jar with all the other has-beens. I just can't completely discard these old friends. (I suppose some animator should do a short on "The Island of Has-Been Brushes," a la The Island of Misfit Toys.")

Dear Davaid I usd to be able to hear the brush scream, but to many rock concerts have dulled my hearing. Perhaps its for the good.

MCJPSApsnm,
In a misfit cartoon voice: " How would you like to be a filbert with no hair?"

I always liked the saying "less is more". Nicely done. And that little turp jar has some good energy in it. Great grays. It's almost like you pulled a couple of gobs right out of the jar.
My hand is raised, I am a brush scrubber/ beater myself.
Why buy a filbert when my flats are filberts after the first session.

I love the jar... there's a sort of groovy enjoyment of colour that always comes through in your work. I think I mean groovy in the sense that you're in a groove with it... it keeps getting better.
