Downtown Shadows

12x9 oil on linen

A simple downtown shot done for graphic shape and abstraction. I had all the windows painted in and the painting was boring... I lost the windows it turned into art.

Very nice, it reads well as an abstract painting too. The tones in the shadow areas were well chosen, From my experience, those seem simple but with the wrong ones the whole thing wouldn't work.

When you start a painting do you think in value masses first or overall composition?

Powerful. BOLD. One of the most exciting paintings I've seen. Love how you keep pushing it.

Happy New Year to you Bill...thanks for the inspiration.

It is really dramatic and engaging. The angles really work with the colors to create something new!

the tension between the low-lying buildings and the monolith makes the hair on the back of my arms dance. i sense the littered floors and fallen ceiling tiles and general lack of safety in the atmosphere.. what awaits in the leaning citadel? no windows.. very private. it must be the color of the shapes!

Gee, you didn't feel compelled to paint all the details in your ref. photo? Smart move. The painting looks great!
