A lesson From Ray Roberts

My class study with some small Ray touch ups...

A few weeks back my buddies Richard Scott, Mark Pacella and I had the good fortune to get a private lesson with Ray Roberts . We met at his new Gallery- 305 N Coast Highway Suite F, Laguna Beach, CA
(2 doors north of Laguna Art Museum)(949)715-4345 See my Ray Roberts link to the left. Ray's teaching out of there and he's one of the best teachers you can find.

After drooling over his and his Wife Peggy's lovely paintings, full of inspiration we marched down to Heisler Park overlooking the water. It was a cold day in Laguna with flat light, but Ray confidently said it was the perfect kind of conditions to paint water. Here are a few shots of me and Mark watching Ray's demo progress.

Here is a oil I bought from Ray at his last show...

and a lovely water color

I love it when artists take the time to post photos of him/her at work. It really helps and inspires novices like me.

Wow, great Bill, and the paintings you bought are great too, I remember you mentioning them.

I think Laguna beach and I think sunny warm days, guess that isn't always the case.

Lovely stuff. The watercolour is super too. Needless to say you've posted a lot of beautiful paintings yourself below this post; always a pleasure to visit.

It looks like he uses a fairly full palette of colors, a few different blues, greens. Do you know what palette he used?

Wray and Ray.. not a bad combo. The water-side rock painting is incredible and is a testimony to the value of the instruction. The subject really lends itself as a platform to show off your mastery of color and texture not to mention other pictorial elements. I can see you continue to get your bang for the buck in So Cal..

I love this piece! You really have a nice rhythm going in that water, nice choppy brushstrokes. Sorry I had to back out from joining you guys that day, looks like you got alot out of it.

I've been a fan of Ray and Peggy's for a few years. I am in awe of how economical and bold Peggy is with her brush. And Ray's landscapes are amazing!
